How to Track Email Link Clicks in Analytics
If you’re sending out emails to a list and you don’t have a email marketing tool that will give you the stats that you need, then there is a way to track how many people click on the links you provide in the emails you send out.
The reason I am writing this topic is that I recently had to use this technique myself and I want to share with you how it is done. I would like to thank Karsten for telling me to ask Riisager how to do just that.
It is actually quite easy as there is a tool called Google Analytics Destination URL Builder that almost does it all for you.
So instead of telling you what to do (which is explained nicely on the website) I’ll show you an example of how I do it. This is for the purpose of this test only.
First You Need to Fill Out the Form
I’ll be using the Case 2008 website in this test. A filled out form can look like the picture you see below.
Then Copy and Paste the Generated URL
Then I’ve taken the URL from step 3 (after clicking “Generate Destination URL”) and pasted it into a test email. If you’re sending out emails to a list be sure to always test that it works before sending the email.
When testing whether it works or not, it is important that you click the link from a computer on an IP address that you haven’t filtered out from within Analytics.
This is Where You Find the Results
There are two places where you can find the stats. One is in the “All Traffic Sources” section and the other is in the “Campaigns” section.
Personally I prefer the campaigns sections because the stats are easier to find (unless of cause you’re running a lot of campaigns at the same time).
If you want to track which URL in a specific email that has been clicked you can easily setup multible different URLs.
Take care,
Mikael

In fact: Google Analytics is a very powerful tool, you can use for all sorts of marketing strategies… I love it
