Is It The Job Offer? Tips On Negotiating Salary
By Neo Marcos
So you've hurdled the exams and the first and final job interviews, and now it looks like you're being invited to the job offer. Technically, you're already in; the job offer is the last formality of the job hiring, you already snagged that job opportunity. Of course you want the job, but you don't want to look desperate that you'd agree to sign anything. How to tackle this delicate monetary topic then, and get the best deal for you?
Do you really want to work for the company? Ask yourself this first. Before you go nodding to the first shiny and astounding job offer that comes your way, ask yourself do you really want to work there, or is there another job opportunity that looks more promising to you. We've all heard it's not always about the money, and this is one time where the proverb really applies. Shop around for a better company and compare their pay, nature of the job, working conditions, and salary benefits, etc., and decide which company stacks up higher than the rest.
Know what you're worth. Know what other companies are paying their employees who hold the same job you are applying for. Some companies advertising their job vacancies on online job searches include their salary offering, so you have an idea just what they're prepared to give you. If you know what your skills and qualifications are worth in the current job market, you'd be more prepared to bargain with the hiring manager.
Be professional. Naturally, the job offer is the time to be discussing money matters, so don't worry about seeming concerned about just the money and not about what you can contribute to the company. Don't hesitate to haggle and assert your points. But be humble when negotiating.
Don't expect too much. There will be a so-called minimum and threshold level of salary offered to you. If you know your worth, don't just settle for something less, but understand
too that companies might not be able to come up with the figure you're asking. Know just how low you can afford to go, but not to the extent that you devalue yourself too much.
Be firm during negotiations. Both parties in a job offer can strike up a compromise when it comes to negotiating salary. Explain to the hiring manager and reiterate why you think you're worth what you're asking for as a starting pay, and go by that. Hiring managers are more impressed by people who are decisive, assertive, and firm at the very start, and see it as a good sign that they've hired well.
So there. In the job market, just like in life, always keep in mind that you're worth more than you think. You can't go wrong with that.
